What we do
Welcome to Cancer Matters Wessex – a resource for everyone in Dorset, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight to find information and support about cancer.
We believe Cancer Matters Wessex will be particularly useful to you if you are affected by cancer, as a patient, family member, carer, volunteer or healthcare worker. You will find information about cancer, treatment options, local services and support available whilst living with and beyond cancer.
We hope you will find the information useful and will continue to use the website as it is developed further with new locally relevant content, news and events in your area.
Who we are
Wessex Cancer Alliance, the Dorset Cancer Partnership and Macmillan Cancer Support collaborated to create the Cancer Matters Wessex website to support everyone affected by cancer in Dorset, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
Wessex Cancer Alliance
Wessex Cancer Alliance brings together health, social care and other organisations to transform the diagnosis, treatment and care for cancer patients in Hampshire, the Isle of Wight and Dorset.
It is a collaboration of NHS organisations responsible for commissioning and providing services; local councils who commission and provide public health services; charities, community and voluntary organisations; patient representatives and groups and academic organisations.
In 2020, Wessex Cancer Alliance are currently leading on new services to support the early detection, diagnosis and treatment of cancer:
- Wessex cancer surgical hub
- Rapid diagnostic service
- Targeted lung health checks
The Dorset Cancer Partnership
The Dorset Cancer Partnership (DCP) was set up in 2016 to bring together all partners involved in the commissioning and delivery of cancer services in Dorset. Members of the DCP include cancer patients and carers, Dorset County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Dorset HealthCare, local authorities, NHS Dorset Clinical Commissioning Group and voluntary and community sector organisations. The DCP vision is:
‘A single Dorset Cancer Service working to prevent cancer within our population, diagnose cancer early, achieve great outcomes, and treat our patients as individuals – with person centred, equitable care for all.’
The DCP has delegated responsibility from the Dorset Integrated Care System for cancer services and this includes ensuring cancer standards are delivered and the Dorset cancer plan is achieved. The programmes of work within the DCP are cancer prevention and early detection, treatment, personalised care and remote patient follow up, end of life and palliative care, cancer information, IT and workforce.
Macmillan Cancer Support
Macmillan helps people with the emotional, practical and financial impact of cancer on their lives.
When most people think of Macmillan, they usually think of Macmillan nurses. But their expert care is only one part of the support we offer. To support everyone living with cancer, we look at the whole picture.
Everything we do is to help people living with cancer live life as fully as they can. In Dorset, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, our allied health professionals (AHPs), nurses, support specialists and services work directly with people with cancer, their families and loved ones every day.
We also aim to keep cancer at the top of the agenda by influencing others and heightening awareness of the issues involved. We raise money to make all our work possible.
