Derek’s Bowel Cancer Story

Derek had no symptoms when he sent off his โ€˜poo stickโ€™.

Over the years he had done his bowel screening regularly and the results had always come clear. This time, however, tiny traces of blood were found, which meant he needed further tests.

Despite this being during the Covid-19 pandemic, Derek had a colonoscopy at the hospital a week later. Within seven weeks, he had had an operation to remove the bowel cancer. It was found so early it meant that he didnโ€™t have to have other more aggressive types of treatment, like chemotherapy.

As a busy 73-year-old, he is grateful that the bowel cancer was found at such a stage where it could just be removed. It means Derek can get on with his very active life, including supporting other veterans at a Breakfast Club and drop in.

He advises everyone to do their bowel screening. He says โ€˜It saved my life. It could save yours.โ€™

Anna’s Bowel Cancer Story

I feel very fortunate…

Anna had bowel cancer โ€“ but she tells us she feels very lucky, because it was found early thanks to her daughter prompting her to see a GP.

โ€œI used to do my bowel screening religiously, but my diagnosis came a few months before my next home-testing kit was dueโ€.

Anna had been experiencing increased breathlessness which concerned her daughter who suggested she speak to a doctor. Annaโ€™s test results showed she was anaemic and there was also blood found in her poo which Anna couldnโ€™t see herself but was found using a FIT test.

Further tests concluded Anna did have bowel cancer.

Annaโ€™s bowel cancer was treatable with an operation. Before she had the surgery, she welcomed the opportunity to improve her fitness by completing a six-week supervised exercise programme at her local gym.

โ€œBeing fitter helped me sail though the operation. I havenโ€™t had any other treatment, and I am now six months on and will be followed up regularly for five years.โ€

Anna wasnโ€™t aware of the signs of anaemia. As well as the breathlessness, she didnโ€™t know hair loss and having nails like paper were also symptoms, and she says she would encourage anyone else experiencing these symptoms to speak to a health professional.

Anna also believes the at home bowel screening kit is really important as it can help spot the early signs of bowel cancer before you notice anything is wrong yourself.

โ€œI feel very fortunate to have had the bowel cancer caught early. I feel very positive. I am getting my fitness back and my anemia improved very quickly as I was given two iron transfusions shortly after my diagnosis.โ€

Bowel cancer screening saves lives. When your home-testing kit arrives in the post, put it by the loo and do it. Donโ€™t put it off.
